The Surface Transportation Board today announced it has posted to its website certain railroad service and employment data collected as a result of the Board’s May 6, 2022 order in EP 770. This order required Class I freight railroads to file additional data, and the four largest carriers to file service recovery plans.
The Board has posted individual carrier service and employment data files, as well as two compilations. The first compilation will be updated on a weekly basis and will include railroad service data collected in EP 724 as well as service data collected in EP 770 (Sub No. 1). Compilation of both data sources in a harmonized format will aid stakeholder data analytics efforts and improve transparency into conditions on the U.S. rail network. Second, the Board will compile monthly in a harmonized format railroad employment data collected pursuant to 49 C.F.R. 1246.1 in its STB Form C and employment data collected in EP 770 (Sub No. 1). These two compilations demonstrate the Board’s commitment to data-driven transparency in the freight rail network amid recent railroad performance deterioration.
