Employment Data

The data page is currently undergoing maintenance.

In December 2024, the Board extended collection in EP 770 (Sub-No. 1) for a small subset of employment data. These data are being collected in a consolidated template with the employment data collected under 49 CFR Part 1246. The most recent data collected for 49 CFR Part 1246 and EP 770 (Sub-No. 1) includes monthly reports of:

  • The average number of employees in six job employee group groups (executive, officials and staff assistants (100); professional and administrative (200); maintenance of way and structures (300); maintenance of equipment & stores (400); transportation other than train and engine (500); and transportation train and engine (600)). These data are reported by all Class I carriers and the National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak).
  • The number of employees working in active service for employee groups 300, 400, 500, and 600.
  • The number of employees furloughed but potentially available for recall for each employee group.

All employment data is reported at the system level. Time series reports for each Class I railroad and a consolidated file for all carriers can be found below:

In EP 770 (Sub-No. 1) the Board directed Class I rail carriers to submit two broad categories of data for rail service and employment for a six-month period to better assess how these carriers are performing amid a challenging supply chain environment. These collections were extended in 2022 and 2023 with some modifications to scope. The archive file of the historical EP 770 (Sub-No.1) data is available here. The archive file also contains legacy 49 Part 1246 data for CP (SOO) and KCS.
